語源
「Gnosticism」はギリシャ語に由来し、特に語『gnōsis』（知識）から来ている。語根『gnō-』は「知る／知識」を意味した。
「Gnosticism」は後期ギリシャ語の『gnōstikismos』や語『gnōsis』からラテン語『gnosticismus』を経て、中英語・近代英語を通じて英語の『Gnosticism』になった。
当初は『知識』や『知識に関すること』を意味していたが、時間とともに秘教的知識による救済を強調する特定の宗教・思想の集合を指すようになった。
