「Francophone」はフランス語に由来する語で、フランス語の語『francophone』に由来する。接頭辞の「franco-」は「フランスの」を意味し、「phone」（ギリシャ語のphōnēに由来）は「声」や「音」を意味する。
「Francophone」は『franco-』と『-phone』を結合してフランス語で作られ、英語にもほぼ同形・同義で取り入れられた（フランス語を話す人や地域を指す）。
