語源
「Areopagite」はギリシア語の『Ἀρειοπαγίτης』に由来し、『Ἄρης』は「アーレース（戦の神）」を、『πάγος』は「岩」または「丘」を意味した。
『Areopagite』は後期ラテン語の『Areopagita』を経て中世英語・近代英語の『Areopagite』となり、現在の英語形に至った。
当初は「アレオパゴスの評議員」を意味したが、時代とともにその文字どおりの意味を保ちつつ、特定の歴史的・教会的な人物を指す称号としても用いられるようになった。
