語源
「white-cedar」は現代英語で形容詞「『white』」と名詞「『cedar』」の結合に由来する。『cedar』は古フランス語「『cedre』」を経てラテン語「『cedrus』」、さらにギリシャ語「『kedros』」に由来する。
『cedar』はギリシャ語『kedros』→ラテン語『cedrus』→古フランス語『cedre』を経て中英語に入り、最終的に英語の'cedar'になった。『white』は古英語の『hwīt』に由来する。'white-cedar'という合成語は近代英語で、色が淡くシーダー様の樹木を指す名称として成立した。
当初『cedar』は真のシーダー属（Cedrus）を特定していたが、時間とともにThujaやChamaecyparisなどの香りがありシーダーに似た複数の樹種にも意味が広がり、『white-cedar』は特定の種ではなく淡色でシーダー様の種を指すようになった。
