「Atlantic」はラテン語の語『Atlanticus』に由来し、『Atlant-』は神話上の人物「Atlas」を指していた。
「Atlantic」はギリシャ語の『Atlantikos』からラテン語の『Atlanticus』を経て、中世ラテン語や中英語を通じて現代英語の『Atlantic』になった。
当初は「Atlasに関する（Atlasの）」を意味していたが、時間とともに「大西洋に関する」という現在の意味に変化した。
