語源
「three-dot」はギリシャ語の『elleipsis（エレイプシス）』に由来し、『elleipein（省く・不足する）』を意味しました。
『three-dot』は後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語の『ellipsis』を経て、古フランス語を通り現代英語の『ellipsis』になりました。印刷・組版の時代に、句読点としての3点表記の用法が確立しました。
当初は「不足・省略」を意味しましたが、時代を経て文法的な『省略』の概念と、3つの点からなる具体的な『句読点（...）』の意味の両方で使われるようになりました。
