語源
「ellipsis」は後期ラテン語の 'ellipsis' に由来し、最終的にはギリシャ語の ἔλλειψις（elleipsis）に由来します。動詞 ἐλλείπω（elleipō）は「不足する、抜かす」を意味しました。
ギリシャ語の ἔλλειψις は後期ラテン語の 'ellipsis' に入り、（中世から近代の学術や翻訳を通じて）英語に入り「省略」や「不足」を意味するようになりました。
当初は「不足すること」「省略」を一般的に意味していましたが、次第に句読点の『...』や語の省略・言葉の途切れを指すようになりました。
