語源
「stereogram」はギリシャ語から来ており、接辞の「stereo-」は「立体（固体）」を意味するstereósに由来し、接尾の「-gram」は「書かれたもの・描かれたもの」を意味するgrammaに由来する。
「stereogram」は19世紀に英語で作られ、立体写真の発展で使われた「stereoscope」や「stereograph」と関連する語である。20世紀後半には、1枚で立体を見せるオートステレオグラム（「Magic Eye」）にも用いられるようになった。
当初は主にステレオスコープで見る2枚組の立体画像を指したが、時代とともに一枚で立体を知覚させるオートステレオグラムにも意味が広がった。
