語源
'ruminative'はラテン語に由来し、特に動詞『ruminare』や過去分詞語幹『ruminativus』から来ている。『rumen（またはrumis）』は『のど・胃（反芻物）』を意味し、そこから『ruminare』は『反芻する』、転じて『熟考する』を意味した。
'ruminative'はラテン語のLate Latin形『ruminativus』などを経て、16～17世紀に動詞『ruminate』として英語に入り、そこから英語で形容詞形が作られて『熟考的・反芻的』を表すようになった。
元来は文字どおり『反芻（物を噛み返すこと）』を指したが、時代とともに比喩的に『考えを繰り返し咀嚼する（深く考える）』という意味に発展した。
