語源
「ritualism」は英語で名詞「ritual」に接尾辞「-ism」（行為・体系・主義を示す）を付けて作られた語です。『ritual』は最終的にラテン語の「ritualis」から来ており、さらに「ritus」（儀式、礼儀）に由来します。
ラテン語の「ritus」から中世ラテン語の「ritualis」（儀式に関する）が生まれ、それが古フランス語の「rituel」のような形を経て中英語の「ritual」になり、現代英語では接尾辞「-ism」を付けて「ritualism」が形成されました。
当初は単に「儀式に関すること（儀式手続き）」を意味しましたが、次第に儀式に基づく主義・運動の意味を持ち、さらに批判的には「形式の過剰な重視（形式主義）」という意味合いへと広がりました。
