語源
「ritenuto」はイタリア語に由来し、語自体は『ritenuto』で、接頭辞の「ri-」（ラテン語の're-'から） は「戻る／再び」を意味し、語幹の「tenere」は「保持する／持つ」を意味します。
ラテン語の動詞『retinēre』（re- + tenēre＝『抑える・保持する』）からイタリア語の動詞『ritenere』、さらに過去分詞の『ritenuto』へ変化し、のちに英語の音楽用語として取り入れられました。
元々は「抑える・留めておく」という一般的な意味でしたが、時を経て音楽の文脈で「（テンポを）抑える／一時的に遅くする」という意味に専門化しました。
