語源
「redox」は英語に由来し、語「reduction」と「oxidation」の混成語です。
「reduction」はラテン語'reducere'（引き戻す）に由来し、「oxidation」はフランス語／ラテン語の'oxydation'（ギリシャ語'oxys'「鋭い・酸性」を由来）に由来します。20世紀に科学者が'reduction–oxidation'の略語として'redox'を使い始め、化学用語として定着しました。
当初は'reduction–oxidation'の略語でしたが、現在では反応の種類そのものや、'redox state'のような形容的用法にも使われる独立した語になっています。
