「redox-active」は現代英語で「redox」と「active」を結合してできた語である。'redox'は英語の'reduction'と'oxidation'の合成語（ブレンド）で、'active'はラテン語の'activus'（語根'agere'＝行う）に由来する。
「redox」は20世紀に'reduction'と'oxidation'を合わせて生まれた略語である。'active'はラテン語'activus'が古フランス語・中英語を経て英語になり、科学用語の' redox'と結び付いて現代の複合語になった。
