語源
「re-baptize」は接頭辞「re-」（ラテン語の 're-'、「再び」を意味）と、ギリシャ語の 'baptizein'（「浸す／つける」を意味）から来る 'baptize' の結合に由来します。
「baptize」はギリシャ語 'baptizein' → 後期ギリシャ語／教会ラテン語 'baptizare' → 中英語を経て英語に入った語で、接頭辞「re-」を付けることで「再度洗礼を行う」という意味の 're-baptize' ができました。
元々は「浸す・つける」という物理的な行為を指していましたが、やがてキリスト教の儀式である「洗礼」を意味するようになり、接頭辞 're-' を付けると「その儀式を再び行う」という意味になります。
