語源
「non-metrical」は英語の接頭辞「non-（否定）」と形容詞「metrical（韻律の／メーターの）」から成り，後者はギリシャ語 metron（測ること，詩のメーター）に由来する。
ギリシャ語 metrikos はラテン語 metricus を経て英語の metrical となり，その前に英語の否定接頭辞 non- が付いて Modern English で複合語が成立した。
当初から「韻律をもたない」という意味で用いられ，現在も詩・音楽・言語学などで規則的なメーターの不在を表す語として用いられている。
