語源
「in」は古英語の'in'に由来し、『〜の中に・〜へ』を意味した。 「time」は古英語の'tīma'に由来し、『時間・季節』を意味した。
『in』は古英語の'in'から中英語を経て現代英語の'in'になった。『tīma』は古英語から中英語の'time'を経て現代の'time'になり、『in time』という表現になった。
当初は『適切な時間内に（〜の中で）』という文字通りの意味だったが、時間とともに『間に合って（十分な時間内に）』『やがて』『（音楽などで）拍子に合って』などの現在の意味に発展した。
