「non-」はラテン語の 'non'（「〜でない」）から、'metric' はギリシャ語の 'metron'（「測る」）を経て入った語に由来します。
『metric』はギリシャ語 'metron' → ラテン語系の 'metricus' → 古フランス語 'metrique' → 中英語 'metric' と変化し、現代英語で否定接頭辞 'non-' が付いて『non-metric』になりました。
当初『metric』は単に「測ること」に関する意味でしたが、次第にメートル法（SI）や数学の『メトリック（距離）』を指すようになり、『non-metric』はこれらの「メトリックでない」という意味の否定語としてできました。
