語源
「non-SI」は接頭辞「non-」と略語「SI」から成る。接頭辞「non-」はラテン語の「non」（〜ではない）に由来し、「SI」はフランス語の「Système international (d'unités)」の略である。
「SI」という略語は20世紀中頃に（フランス語の「Système international」から）成立した。そこに否定の接頭辞「non-」を付けた表現が後に作られ、SIの外にある単位を示すために「non-SI」が使われるようになった。
当初から「SIの一部ではない」という意味で、時間を経てもその核心的な意味は変わっていない。
