語源
'noesis'はギリシャ語の'νόησις'（noēsis）に由来し、語根'νοε-'（動詞'νοεῖν' / noein に由来）は「知覚する・考える」を意味した。
'noesis'は近代ラテン語・中世ラテン語の哲学用語として英語に入った。その起源は古代ギリシャ語'νόησις'で、17〜19世紀以降、哲学・神学の文脈で英語で用いられるようになった。
もともとはギリシャ語で「知的な知覚・働き」を指していたが、その後も大筋では同様の意味を保ちつつ、アリストテレスやフッサールらの伝統で「知性の特定の様態・意向的行為」を指すように専門化された。
