語源
「imprint」はラテン語の 'imprimere' に由来し、接頭辞 'in-' は「～の中／上」を、'primere'（'premere' に由来）は「押す」を意味した。
『imprimere』は古フランス語の 'empreindre' に変化し、中英語の 'imprinten' のような形を経て現代英語の 'imprint'（および 'imprinting'）になった。
当初は「（物理的に）押し付ける」を意味していたが、やがて「跡や印象を残す」「心に刻む」のような比喩的な意味も含むようになった。
