「humanism」はラテン語の「humanus（人間に関する）」に由来し、語尾の「-ism」は（ギリシャ語／ラテン語由来で）制度や思想を表す。
ラテン語の「humanus」は「humanitas（教養・人間性）」へとつながり、イタリア語のルネサンス期用語「umanista（人文学の学者）」を経て、フランス語「humanisme」から19世紀に英語の「humanism」になった。
