語源
「gynaeceum」は古代ギリシャ語の語『γυναικεῖον』（gynaikeion）に由来し、そこでの『γυνή（gynē）』は「女性」を意味した。
ギリシア語の『gynaikeion』は後にラテン語（学術ラテン語）の『gynaecium』などの形で借用され、中英語で『gynaeceum』として入り、近代英語の『gynaeceum』（綴りの変種としてgynaeciumやgynoeciumも存在）に定着した。
当初は「女性の居所」「女性用の部屋」を意味したが、やがて修道院などの類似する女性居住区にも用いられ、さらに植物学においては比喩的に「花の雌器官（雌しべの集合）」を指すようになった。
