語源
「harem」はアラビア語の『ḥarīm（または haram）』に由来し、もともとは「禁制・神聖で触れてはならないもの（立ち入り禁止）」を意味した。
『ḥarīm』はオスマン・トルコ語の『haremlik／harem』に変化し、フランス語の『harem』などを経て17世紀以降に英語に入った。
当初は「立ち入り禁止の場所」を意味していたが、次第に「家庭内の女性の居住区（后宮）」を指すようになり、さらに比喩的に「1人の男性を取り巻く女性の集団」や動物学的な群れの意味にも拡張された。
