語源
「gallicism」は近代フランス語の単語「gallicisme」に由来し、さらにラテン語の「Gallicus（ガリアの、フランスの）」に由来する。
「gallicism」は19世紀ごろフランス語「gallicisme」を経て英語に入り、ラテン語「Gallicus（ガリアに関する）」から発展して英語の名詞になった。
当初は「ガリア（フランス）に関する（地理的・民族的）」を意味していたが、時とともに「他言語に取り入れられたフランス語の語・表現・様式」を意味するようになった。
