「exponential」は「exponent」＋接尾辞「-ial」による英語の形成で、'exponent'は最終的にラテン語の'exponēns'（動詞'exponere'の現在分詞）に由来し、'ex-'は「外へ」、'ponere'は「置く」を意味した。
ラテン語'exponēre' → ラテン語系の'exponens'/'exponent-'（後期ラテン語／中世ラテン語） → 英語の'exponent'（16世紀末） → 形容詞として'exponential'（英語、後の形成）となり、当初は「指数に関する」の意味だった。
