語源
「dilation」はラテン語の「dilatatio」に由来し、もとの動詞「dilatare」は「広げる」を意味した（接頭辞 di-/dis- は「離れて」、語根は「広い／広がる」を表す）。
「dilatatio」は古フランス語の「dilatation」を経て中英語に入り、最終的に現代英語の「dilation」になった。
当初は「広げる行為・状態」を指したが、次第に医療的な拡張や幾何学的な拡大縮小などの意味も含むようになった。
