「demythologization」は現代英語に由来し、接頭辞「de-」（ラテン語の「de-」で「離す・取り除く」を意味）と、ギリシャ語の「mythos」（物語・神話）に由来する「mytho-」および「logos」（言葉・語り・学び）に由来する語要素と、動詞化接尾辞「-ize」および名詞化接尾辞「-ation」から構成されている。
