語源
『countercathartic』は接頭辞『counter-』（「反対」）と『cathartic』（「浄化・排出」）から成る合成語である。
『counter-』は古仏語『contre』（ラテン語『contra』由来）で「反対」を意味し、『cathartic』はギリシャ語『kathartikos』（『kathairein』「清める」由来）からラテン語、古英語を経て現代英語の『cathartic』となり、これらが結合して『countercathartic』となった。
当初は語の構成どおり「浄化に反する」という直訳的意味であったが、やがて医療的な下剤作用や感情的なカタルシス双方を阻害する物質・性質を指す語として用いられるようになった。
