語源
「color-reactive」は現代英語における複合語で、「color（語源はラテン語『color』〈色〉）」と「reactive（『react』〈再び・戻ってを表す『re-』＋『agere』〈する・駆動する〉に由来）に形容詞語尾『-ive』（〜の性質をもつ）が付いた形）」を組み合わせたもの。
「color-reactive」は20世紀後半の技術・商業分野で「heat-sensitive」「light-sensitive」のような型に倣って既存の英語要素から作られたハイフン結合の修飾語として用いられるようになった。
当初は「色に関与する形で反応しやすい」の意だったが、現在は「刺激で色が変わる材料」と「反応の結果として可視の色を生じる系」という2つの用法が特に強調されるようになった。
