「bogeyman」は英語に由来し、具体的には「bogey」＋「man」から来ており、「bogey」は幽霊や鬼のような恐ろしい存在を意味していた。
中英語の「bugge」（恐ろしい生き物）から後の英語形「bogey」へ変化し、それが「man」と結合して近代英語の「bogeyman」になった。
