語源
「bicentric」は、接頭辞『bi-』（2つの）と、ギリシャ語『kéntron』（点・中心）に由来する『centric』（中心の）に基づき、形容詞語尾『-ic』を付けた語である。
『kéntron』はラテン語『centrum』となり、英語『center/centric』へと受け継がれ、近代英語で接頭辞『bi-』が付いて『bicentric』が学術的用法として成立した。
当初から「中心が二つある」の意で用いられ、この基本義を保ったまま、幾何学や都市研究などの専門領域へ拡張した。
