語源
「bandy」は北欧ゲルマン語派（古ノルド語など）に由来し、'benda' のような語幹（「曲げる・打つ」を意味する）に由来する。
中英語の形（例: 「bandy」＝「曲がった／行き来させる」）から変化し、「ボールを打つ・打ち返す」の意や、やがて「行き来してやりとりする」やスポーツ名の意味を発展させた。
当初は「曲げる」「打つ」のような意味だったが、次第に「行き来させる・やり取りする」（動詞）や氷上競技の名称（名詞）という現在の意味に変化した。
