語源
「backwoodsman」は英語に由来し、複合語「backwoods」＋「man」から来ている。'back'は「後ろ・離れた所」を、'wood(s)'は「森」を意味した。
「backwoodsman」は18～19世紀（特に北米）に使われた表現「back-woods man」から発展し、後に一語の「backwoodsman」になった。構成要素は古英語の'bæc'（後ろ）、'wudu'（森）、'mann'（人）に遡る。
