語源
「autoregulation」は英語に由来し、接頭辞「auto-」（ギリシャ語「autos」＝「自己」）と「regulation」（ラテン語「regula」/「regulare」＝「規則」や「整える」を意味する語）を組み合わせてできた語である。
「regulation」はラテン語の 'regulatio' を経て古フランス語を通じ英語に入り、最終的に現代英語の 'regulation' になった。接頭辞「auto-」はギリシャ語 'autos'（自己）から来て英語の結合形として取り入れられた。『autoregulation』という複合語は主に19–20世紀の科学英語で形成された。
もともと 'regulation' は『規則』や『規則に従うこと』を指したが、次第に『制御・調節する作用』という意味になった。『autoregulation』は特に科学領域で『自己による制御・調節』を指すようになった。
