語源
「autocephalous」はギリシャ語の「autokephalos」（αὐτοκέφαλος）に由来し、'auto-'は「自己」、'kephalē'は「頭（かしら）」を意味した。
ギリシャ語の『autokephalos』が中世・近世ラテン語（例：'autocephalus'）に入り、フランス語の『autocéphale』などを経て英語の形『autocephalous』になった。
当初は「自分の頭を持つ（文字通りの意味）」を示したが、次第に「（特に教会が）自ら統治する、自立している」という意味に発展した。
