語源
「autarchy」はギリシャ語の『autarkeia』（αὐταρκεία）に由来し、'auto-'は「自己」、'arkein'は「十分である／支配する」を意味した。
『autarkeia』はラテン語の『autarchia』を経て、フランス語の『autarchie』や中英語を通り、近代英語の『autarchy』となった。
当初は「（特に経済的な）自給自足」を意味していたが、時代とともに「絶対的主権」や「専制的支配」という意味も帯びるようになった。
