語源
「archipallium」は新ラテン語に由来し、ギリシャ語の接頭辞「arkhi-」とラテン語の語「pallium」を組み合わせた語で、「arkhi-」は「主要な」を、「pallium」は「外套（マント）」を意味した。
「archipallium」は解剖学用語としてギリシャ語要素とラテン語要素を結合して新ラテン語で作られ、主要な（古い）被蓋領域を示すために比較神経解剖学に導入された。現代では『archicortex』や『archaecortex』がより一般的になっているが、用語自体は科学文献に残る。
当初は「主要な外套（解剖学的層）」を意味したが、時間とともに系統発生的に古い皮質領域（古皮質／海馬領域）を特に指す語となった。
