語源
「neopallium」はニューラテン語由来で、接頭辞の「neo-」はギリシャ語の「neos」（意味は「新しい」）に由来し、「pallium」はラテン語で「外套・マント」を意味する（解剖学的には皮質・被膜の意で用いられる）。
「neopallium」はギリシャ語の「neo-」とラテン語の「pallium」を組み合わせた解剖学的ニューラテン語の語で、19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけて英語の学術用語として取り入れられた。
当初は文字通り「新しい外套／マント」を意味したが、次第に脳の帆（pallium）のうち進化的に新しい部分、すなわち新皮質（neocortex）を指す語として定着した。
