語源
「isocortex」は近代の学術用語で、ギリシャ語の接頭辞 'iso-'（ギリシャ語 'isos'＝「等しい」）とラテン語 'cortex'（「樹皮」や「外層」を意味）を組み合わせている。
19世紀末から20世紀初頭に解剖学・神経解剖学の文脈で作られ、より「一様な」皮質を指す語として使われ、時に「neocortex」と同義で用いられてきた。
文字通りには「等しい＋外層」という意味だったが、時代とともに哺乳類の比較的一様な6層構造を持つ大脳皮質を指す専門用語へと意味が定着した。
