語源
「neocortex」は新ラテン語・現代の学術造語に由来し、ギリシャ語 'neos'（新しい）を意味する接頭辞 'neo-' と、ラテン語 'cortex'（樹皮・外層）を組み合わせたものです（脳の外層を比喩的に指す）。
「neocortex」は19～20世紀の現代の医学・科学用語として 'neo-' と 'cortex' を組み合わせて作られ、進化的に新しい大脳皮質領域を指す専門用語として英語に入ったものです。
当初は「新しい（外層の）皮」という文字どおりの意味でしたが、次第に高次認知機能を担う進化的に新しい皮質領域を指す解剖学的専門用語として定着しました。
