語源
「apposition」はラテン語の『appositio』に由来し、接頭辞の『ad-』（同化して『ap-』）は「〜へ、〜に」を意味し、'ponere'は「置く」を意味した。
『appositio』は後期ラテン語を経て中英語に取り入れられ（例: 'apposition' のような形）、最終的に現代英語の『apposition』となった。
もともとは「（物を）横に置くこと、並置すること」を意味したが、次第に特に「一つの名詞句が他の名詞句のそばに置かれてそれを説明・特定する文法概念」を指すようになった。
