語源
「appositive」はラテン語に由来し、特に中世／後期ラテン語の語『appositivus』から来ている。接頭辞『ad-』（同化して『ap-』）は「〜へ／〜に向かって」を、語根『ponere』は「置く」を意味した。
『appositive』は中世／後期ラテン語の『appositivus』（ラテン語の過去分詞『appositus』＝『apponere／adponere』に由来）を経て、近代に英語の文法用語として入ってきた。
元々は「近くに置かれた／置かれること」を意味していたが、時を経て「（名詞の）説明・呼び換えのために隣に置かれる語句」を指す文法上の意味に発展した。
