「apostolicity」は後期ラテン語の語『apostolicitas』に由来し、『apostolicus』は「使徒に関する」を意味し、最終的には古代ギリシャ語の『apostolos』（「遣わされた者」）に遡る。
『apostolicity』は後期ラテン語の『apostolicitas』や中世ラテン語の形から中英語（記録上は『apostolicite』など）を経て現代英語の『apostolicity』になった。
元は「使徒に関する・使徒の」を意味していたが、次第に「使徒的である性質」や（教会語では）「使徒継承による正統性」を指すようになった。
