語源
「apophasis（アポファシス）」はギリシャ語の『apóphasis（ἀπόφασις）』に由来し、『apo-』は「離れて・〜から」を意味し、『phas-（話す・述べるの語根）』に由来する。
『apophasis』は後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語を経て学術語として英語に取り入れられ、現代英語の『apophasis』となった。
当初は否定的な陳述や否定（神学では属性の否定）を指していたが、次第に『否定することによって言及する修辞』や『神を否定的に記述する神学』を特に指す語となった。
