語源
「apophatic」はギリシャ語の「apophatikos」に由来し、「apo-」は「離れて」を意味し、「phasis/ phatikos」は「語る・述べる」に関係し（したがって「否定・言いのけ」）を表す。
「apophatikos」は中世・教会ラテン語の「apophaticus」を経て英語の「apophatic」となり、特に神学の文脈で用いられるようになった。
当初は「否定に関する」を意味したが、時とともに神について否定的に記述する神学（否定神学）を指す専門用語に発展し、哲学的な広義の用法も残った。
