語源
'preterition'はラテン語の単語『praeteritiō』に由来し、接頭辞の'praeter-'は「越えて・過ぎる」を意味し、接尾辞'-tiō'は行為・状態を示す名詞形成要素です。
'preterition'はラテン語のLate Latin／Medieval Latin『praeteritiō』（またはpraeterire「過ぎ去る」）から学術的借用として英語に入り、16–17世紀に初期近代英語で用いられるようになりました。
当初は「通り過ぎること」や単なる「省略」を意味しましたが、時を経て「意図的な省略」や『触れないと言いつつ触れる』という修辞的意味を帯びるようになりました。
