語源
「antisyphilitic」は、ギリシャ語接頭辞「anti-（〜に対して）」と、ネオラテン語の「syphiliticus」（「syphilis」から）を組み合わせた語に由来します。『syphilis』は1530年にGirolamo Fracastoroが名付けた病名です。
「antisyphilitic」は「anti-」＋ネオラテン語「syphiliticus」（または「antisyphiliticus」）から作られ、18〜19世紀の医学文献で用いられるようになり、最終的に英語の形容詞・場合によっては名詞として定着しました。
当初は単に「梅毒に対して反対する・対抗する」という意味でしたが、時間と共に薬剤や治療法などについて「梅毒を予防・治療する」というより具体的な意味で使われるようになりました。
