語源
「anti-icon」は英語の新しい合成語で、ギリシャ語の『anti』（反対を意味する）という接頭辞と、ギリシャ語の『eikōn』（像・肖像を意味する）から来る『icon』から成る。
『icon』はギリシャ語『eikōn』からラテン語・古仏語を経て英語に入った。『anti-』はギリシャ語由来の接頭辞で、組成語として英語で用いられるようになった。『anti-icon』という合成語は20世紀〜21世紀の文化批評で比較的新しく使われ始めた。
構成要素は本来「像に対する」を意味していたが、現在では「偶像的地位に反対・抵抗すること／偶像を拒むこと」を示す語として用いられる。
