語源
「antihero」は接頭辞「anti-」（ギリシャ語の'antí'、『反対』の意）と「hero」（ギリシャ語の'hērōs'、『英雄』の意）から成り、19世紀に英語で複合語として形成された。
当初はハイフン付きの「anti-hero」と書かれ、後に現代英語ではつづりを連結した「antihero」も一般化した。
当初は伝統的な英雄像に対する『反対』を示していたが、次第に伝統的英雄的資質を欠く主人公（道徳的に曖昧な人物）を指す語として定着した。
