語源
「anti-authoritarianism」は接頭辞「anti-」（ギリシャ語の「anti」で「反〜」を意味）と「authoritarianism」（「authoritarian」に「-ism」が付いた語）を組み合わせて作られた語に由来する。
「anti-authoritarianism」は近代英語で生産的な接頭辞「anti-」を「authoritarianism」に付けて形成された。'authority'はラテン語『auctoritas』から来て、古フランス語『autorité』を経て中英語の『authority』になり、『authoritarian』『authoritarianism』は19〜20世紀にかけて発展した用法である。
構成要素は元々「反＋権威」を文字通り意味したが、やがて中央集権的・強制的な権力に反対する一つのイデオロギーや態度・実践を指す語へと発展した。
